Frequent words or phrases in describing the weather and their definitions. Read, listen, repeat.
Word: calm (kalm) = less than 3 (three) knots
Example: ATIS: Wind calm
Word: dew point (du point) = tempertature at which the air reaches 100 % humidity
Example: ATIS: dew point 10
Word: humidity (hyu-mid-i-te) = amount of water vapor in the air, expressed as a percentage (%)
Phrase: standard pressure (stan ' derd presh'er) = atmospheric pressure at sea level
Force per unit area exerted by the air above the surface of the Earth. Standard sea-level pressure, by definition, equals 1 atmosphere (atm), or 29.92 in. (760 mm) of mercury, 14.70 lbs per square in., or 101.35 kilopascals, but pressure varies with elevation and temperature.
Word: turbulence = that which causes a momentary change in altitude and/or attitude (can be light, moderate or severe)
